Called to Serve (Part 11): A Letter to the Next Chaplain

Image
Throughout this series, I have written about calling, presence, grief, leadership, tradition, prayer, and the quiet responsibilities that come with serving others. As this series draws toward its conclusion, I want to look toward the future. One day, someone else will step into the role I now occupy, carrying the same weight and walking the same hallways. One Step at a Time: Discovering Who I Am and Where I Am Going

I had begun to realize that my passions were not really in microbiology. Yet I still had a year to complete. So I completed it. There was also the compulsory National Youth Service ahead of me. So I completed that too. I did not have the entire ...

Every Independence Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate the journey of a nation that gained independence on October 1, 1960. It is a day to remember the sacrifices of those who came before us, appreciate how far we have travelled, acknowledge the challenges that remain, and consider the future we are building together. But perhaps Independence Day should also make us ask a more searching question: What kind of nation are we building? It is easy to speak about the Nigeria we want. We want a peaceful nation. A just nation. A prosperous nation. A secure nation. A nation where children can receive quality education, where people can access healthcare, where businesses can grow, where citizens can pursue opportunity, and where public institutions can be trusted. But nations are not built by wishes alone. They are built through leadership, governance, institutions, justice, responsibility and the ...
